A friend’s home at the water’s edge
An authentic Corsican villa built in 1880, when Europe’s aristocracy took to wintering in the sun, the 4-star Hôtel Les Mouettes in Ajaccio wears its Riviera spirit well.
First a private house, then one of the island’s earliest luxury hotels, under the name Hostellerie de la Grande Bleue, it later belonged to the diocese and was turned into a film studio, with a little help from the writer and film-maker Marcel Pagnol, before becoming Hôtel Les Mouettes.
Almost 150 years of hospitality later, it still delights in the company of others and is as eager as ever to share with them the privilege of an Eden at the water’s edge.
Set on a beach of pale golden sand on the Gulf of Ajaccio, all soft pink walls and white balustrades, the 4-star Hôtel Les Mouettes is home to 27 elegant rooms and suites, most with terraces that run right up to the sea: little pockets of paradise.
